Razzle – Hanoi Rocks -legendan tarina -kirjan kansi on julkaistu! Valokuvan otti vuonna 1984 Justin Thomas, kannen suunnitteli Tuomo Parikka, ja lopputulos on hieno.
Teos ilmestyy Liken kautta syyskuussa sekä painettuna että e-kirjana. Razzle-kirja Liken sivuilla.
”We’re living in strange times”, I’ve heard people say time and time again lately – and now I finally know what they mean by it:
Desert Inn Records, the Italian label that around 20 years ago decided to make a tribute album for the Boys and the Hollywood Brats, have finally released it!
The record is called You Wanna Know What It’s Like and it is now out in a format that was barely thought about when the project started: It’s available for streaming.
What this has to do with me? Not much, except that the band that I later joined, Hundred Million Martians, made a version of ”Soda Pressing” and now it’s out at last. I’m not on it personally, but I almost feel like I am.
If I may suggest: instead of listening to it for free buy the digital album. Why? Because the money goes to the Italian Red Cross to help them to help people to get through these strange times with epidemics, sudden age-old tribute records coming out and pandemics and death and stuff.

Liken kesän ja syksyn 2020 katalogi paljastaa, että julkaisen tänä vuonna kaksi kirjaa. Aiemmin uutisoidun, tässä kuussa ilmestyvän Minna Kauppi – Suunta/vaiston lisäksi syksyllä ilmestyy kirja nimeltä Razzle – Hanoi Rocks -legendan tarina.

Razzle kertoo vuonna 1984 traagisesti kuolleen Hanoi-rumpalin elämästä. Juuri elämä oli kirjan tekemisen lähtökohtana: kaikki muistavat, kuinka Razzle kuoli, mutta hänen vaiheistaan harva tietää yhtään mitään. Halusin kirjoittaa Razzlen tarinan, koska hän on vaarassa jäädä rockin historianhistoriankirjoituksessa pelkäksi sivulliseksi uhriksi, alaviitteeksi toisen bändin tarinassa. Razzle oli niin täynnä iloa ja elämää, että sellainen tuntuu väärältä. Päästän kirjassa ääneen ne, jotka tunsivat Razzlen.

Minna Kauppi – Suunta/vaisto -kirjan ilmestymiseen on aikaa enää pari viikkoa. Se oli projekti, joka opetti minulle enemmän kuin yksikään aiempi kirjani: Liikuin sitä tehdessäni itselleni täysin vieraalla alueella, huippu-urheilun maailmoissa. Suunta/vaisto ei silti ole pelkkä suunnistuskirja. Pahojen rastien kohtaaminen ja oikean reitin etsiminen on leimannut Minna Kaupin elämää paljon urheilua laajemminkin.
Olen hyvin iloinen ja erittäin ylpeä kirjasta, jonka teimme Minnan kanssa. Suunta/vaisto julkaistaan paperilla, e-kirjana ja äänikirjana. Teoksen voi tilata ennakkoon täältä.
Vietän itsekseni kymmenvuotiskirjailijajuhlaa. Ensimmäinen kirjani Hanoi Rocks – All Those Wasted Years nimittäin ilmestyi kymmenen vuotta sitten, aprillipäivänä 1.4.2009. Jei!
Se kevät oli aiiiiivannn mieletön huipennus monen vuoden kirjoitustyölle ja määrätietoiselle haaveilulle, ja siitä alkoi ammatillisessa mielessä uusi vaihe elämässä.
Olen edelleen sillä tiellä ja tiedän olevani etuoikeutettu. Näissä hommissa kokemiani asioita ja keräämiäni muistoja ei voi rahalla ostaa. Se sopii hyvin, koska rahaahan on lähinnä vain rikkailla.

I know I will, because the book started a whole new chapter in my professional life… And come to think of it, in all my life. That spring was a blast and gave me experiences and memories money can’t buy – which suits me fine, since I don’t have much!

Michael Monroe -kirja on julkaistu jättipokkarina!
Pikaisen guugeloinnin perusteella pehmeäkantista eeposta myyvät netissä ainakin Levykauppa Äx, Suomalainen kirjakauppa, Cdon.com, Adlibris ja Booky.fi. Sen löytää myös ihan oikeistakin myymälöistä eli kirjakaupoista.
On hieno juttu, että Monroe-kirjan elämä jatkuu edelleen, sillä aiemmat viisi painosta on myyty loppuun. Like Kustannuksen Monroe-kirjasivu arvostelulainauksineen on täällä ja Michael Monroen virallinen nettisivusto täällä.
Ja tarina jatkuu kohti uusia lukuja: Michael Monroe on loka-marraskuussa kiertueella, ja uusi albumi on tulossa.
Excuse me for being busy and lazy – these gems have been out there for a while already. But I suppose a little late update is in order, as at least of some of the new versions are still available.
Svart Records released two Michael Monroe albums on vinyl, his solo debut Nights Are So Long (1987) and Peace of Mind (1996). Knowing me as the Hanoi-and-related enthusiast that I am, they asked me to write the liner notes. I duly did the honors, of course. These albums are very important for me personally, especially Peace of Mind, now available on vinyl for the first time.

There are more to these releases than my scribblings. A job well done with the cover art and mastering. Bonus tracks and new photos on both of ’em. I sincerely recommend that you’d check these records out in any format. It’s only rock’n’roll (except for the ”Peace of Mind” title track, that’s an actual piéce de résistance!), but if that’s your thing, you’ll love these.
Exactly a year ago, on November the 18th 2016, Cleopatra Books put out a gorgeous English edition of the Hanoi Rocks book All Those Wasted Years.
Since then, the response has been fantastic. People from all over the world have contacted me just to say thank you! Oh, please – don’t mention it, I’m just happy and honored to get to be a part of this. After all, it is the greatest rock’n’roll story ever!

Lately, in addition to my other music journo work, I’ve been writing some liner notes for Svart Records’ re-releases. They’ve put out a couple of classy rock and roll records, first time on vinyl: Andy McCoy’s second solo album Building on Tradition (1995) and Fishfaces’ (starring Claude from Smack) Lovesongs for Hyenas (1993).
Since Fishfaces never got the recognition they deserved and basically nobody knows who they were, I decided to write their whole story on the record sleeve, with interviews with their drummer Jarkko Nikulainen and the album’s producer Mikko Karmila.
With Building on Tradition, I concentrated more on the ”making of” side of things, with a little help from Gyp Casino and Dan Lagerstedt, who played on the album.
As always, Svart Records has done magnificent work in re-packaging the records. Building on Tradition has two bonus tracks, Lovesongs for Hyenas comes with a bonus 7″, a re-issue of the band’s debut single. I don’t think these gems have ever sounded better. Vinyl really suits them. Stellar cover art, too.
They’re probably sold out already, but I suggest you try and find them somewhere!
Any good publicity is good publicity!
The latest issue (No. 44) of the excellent British rock magazine Vive Le Rock has Hanoi Rocks on the cover. In the article, the writer Joe Whyte calls All Those Wasted Years the book ”a gorgeous work of art as well as a document that details every nuance of a band that lived life like every minute was their last.”
The previous issue (No. 43, The Stranglers on the cover) had Whyte’s review of the book: ”With few punches pulled in the text, this is a stunning legacy of a band who birthed a million imitators.”
