Arched Fire: New Song & Video!
The Finnish metal band’s debut single ponders the powers of the algorithms.
“Remote-Controlled End” is the first video single of Arched Fire, a Finnish metal band working on their debut album to be released later this year. Musically, Arched Fire is where heavy metal meets speed metal—“hevispiidi”, as a Finnish radio dj called them a long time ago.
“We’ve only had this band for a couple of years, but there was a long break in between”, says Ari, their guitar player.
Formed in Finnish Lapland, Arched Fire played a bunch of gigs in 1989–1990, when the band members were still in school. Now, together with their new singer, the re-formed band has written and recorded an album’s worth on new songs based on the sketches and ideas from back in the day.
“We’ve made a metal record with old-school dynamics and present-day standards. When your teenage kicks meet your current musical skills, it is a lot of fun.”
“Remote-Controlled End” is the first single off their forthcoming album Remote Control. The theme of the songs is smart-phone addiction and the AI revolution, the power of algorithms over people.
Remote Control will be released later in 2021.

Razzle – Hanoi Rocks -legendan tarina -kirjan kansi on julkaistu! Valokuvan otti vuonna 1984 Justin Thomas, kannen suunnitteli Tuomo Parikka, ja lopputulos on hieno.
Teos ilmestyy Liken kautta syyskuussa sekä painettuna että e-kirjana. Razzle-kirja Liken sivuilla.

You Wanna Know What It’s Like?
”We’re living in strange times”, I’ve heard people say time and time again lately – and now I finally know what they mean by it:
Desert Inn Records, the Italian label that around 20 years ago decided to make a tribute album for the Boys and the Hollywood Brats, have finally released it!
The record is called You Wanna Know What It’s Like and it is now out in a format that was barely thought about when the project started: It’s available for streaming.
What this has to do with me? Not much, except that the band that I later joined, Hundred Million Martians, made a version of ”Soda Pressing” and now it’s out at last. I’m not on it personally, but I almost feel like I am.
If I may suggest: instead of listening to it for free buy the digital album. Why? Because the money goes to the Italian Red Cross to help them to help people to get through these strange times with epidemics, sudden age-old tribute records coming out and pandemics and death and stuff.

Liken kesän ja syksyn 2020 katalogi paljastaa, että julkaisen tänä vuonna kaksi kirjaa. Aiemmin uutisoidun, tässä kuussa ilmestyvän Minna Kauppi – Suunta/vaiston lisäksi syksyllä ilmestyy kirja nimeltä Razzle – Hanoi Rocks -legendan tarina.

Razzle kertoo vuonna 1984 traagisesti kuolleen Hanoi-rumpalin elämästä. Juuri elämä oli kirjan tekemisen lähtökohtana: kaikki muistavat, kuinka Razzle kuoli, mutta hänen vaiheistaan harva tietää yhtään mitään. Halusin kirjoittaa Razzlen tarinan, koska hän on vaarassa jäädä rockin historianhistoriankirjoituksessa pelkäksi sivulliseksi uhriksi, alaviitteeksi toisen bändin tarinassa. Razzle oli niin täynnä iloa ja elämää, että sellainen tuntuu väärältä. Päästän kirjassa ääneen ne, jotka tunsivat Razzlen.

Minna Kauppi – Suunta/vaisto -kirjan ilmestymiseen on aikaa enää pari viikkoa. Se oli projekti, joka opetti minulle enemmän kuin yksikään aiempi kirjani: Liikuin sitä tehdessäni itselleni täysin vieraalla alueella, huippu-urheilun maailmoissa. Suunta/vaisto ei silti ole pelkkä suunnistuskirja. Pahojen rastien kohtaaminen ja oikean reitin etsiminen on leimannut Minna Kaupin elämää paljon urheilua laajemminkin.
Olen hyvin iloinen ja erittäin ylpeä kirjasta, jonka teimme Minnan kanssa. Suunta/vaisto julkaistaan paperilla, e-kirjana ja äänikirjana. Teoksen voi tilata ennakkoon täältä.

The Past is Alive
It was so much fun making HMM videos (posted here earlier) that I decided to do it again. I found some more photos, took some music from my other bands and did a couple of Youtube videos just for the old times’ sake. To me, they’re like photo albums with a soundtrack.
Here’s Existence On/Off, the opening track of the Telenovelas’ album I am the Destroyer that Plastic Passion released in 2013.
This one’s much older, the music and the pictures date much further back. Like a Moviestar is from The Phantom Tones’ album Entitled Nameless, out on Hiljaiset Levyt in 2000.
Also, Hundred Million Martians has a new 12″ vinyl compilation out – well, not really out as in released, just a very, very limited edition was made for a certain special occasion, but it exists anyway, and because I did liner notes for this ultra-rarity, I decided to add it to the music and liner-notes pages here.
So, in a way, the past is alive.
